What is Considered a Rescue Dog?
A rescue dog is a dog that has been placed in a new home after being abused, neglected, or abandoned by its previous owner. … Many animal rescue organizations exist to rescue, protect, care and re-home dogs from unnecessary euthanasia.
Kevin out with one of the play groups. They all know that he usually has treats in his pockets. Notice the variety of dogs!
Many of our dogs at the Storm Shelter Sled Dog Sanctuary and Rescue, are elderly or require special needs. So obviously we spend a lot of time with these dogs at the veterinarian’s office. We are so lucky to have Dr. Gretchen Gerber as the primary caregiver for all of these great dogs. She goes above and beyond to take care of our pack. This picture was taken at the clubhouse at The Northern Pines Sled Dog Race where Dr. Gerber was the race vet. Pictured here are Yukon and Denali, her largest patients.
These gentle giants are a crowd favorite as many people do not get a chance to see dogs that weigh 150 and 165 lbs. These are also dogs that we share custody of with Door County Sled Dogs. Yukon and Denali are brother and sister, but from different litters. Their original owners went their separate ways leaving Yukon and Denali looking for a place to live.
Jasper is a sanctuary dog here. Originally from a southern state, we was in a shelter in the cities. Startled by a loud noise, he bolted under fencing and escaped. Shelter workers were quietly and calmly luring him back to them when an overly enthusiastic police officer tackled Jasper. Jasper bit the officer and found himself on the euthanasia list. Jasper is a happy little guy even though he has health issues from abuse in his past. He has scars, a partially collapsed lobe in his lung, a chronically injured leg and a couple of shotgun pellets in his neck. We love him and think he is perfect the way he is.
Blizzard (white) and Iris are sanctuary dogs here both for the same reason – both suffer from seizures. Blizzard is a dog that we “share” with Door County Sled Dogs. One of their volunteers saved him from a tough situation. Blizzard’s seizures were often and hard to control, mostly as cluster seizures. He came to us for more extensive vet care. Blizzard is responding well to his meds now. Iris comes from some rescue friends in International Falls. Her owner in Canada could no longer keep her during a move, so Iris moved here. Her seizures are fairly well controlled with meds.
Sampson and Sweetie would be available for adoption
if the perfect home came along.
Sweetie and Sampson came to us on Ash Weds. of 2019. They were rescued by our friends at North Metro Animal Control during the polar vortex of that year. They were found along with two other dogs tied to a post in someone’s back yard. It was -30 and they had no shelter, water or food. At first we thought they were elderly dogs, but it was just the circumstances that they had been through. Once they had seen our vet for their neuter and spay and dental care, she determined that they are only probably between 6-8 years old. They are a bonded pair and need to stay together. They are also not good with other dogs or small animals. But they have found their niche here.
